All properties in Cook County are reassessed on a triennial schedule. Every three years, the new valuations – along with appeals, exemptions, local tax levies, and assessments of nearby properties – determine the amount of future property tax bills.
The Assessor’s Office, the Board of Review, the Cook County Clerk, and the Cook County Treasurer all play a role in the property tax system.
Cook County Townships
For the purposes of reassessment scheduling, the thirty townships within Cook County are divided into three groups:
- North and Northwest suburbs
- South and Southwest suburbs
- City of Chicago
Townships provide a set of core services to their respective residents that are financed by property tax revenue. These services usually include road maintenance, issuance of building permits, processing of tax exemption applications, and social programs.
City of Chicago
The townships of Hyde Park, Jefferson, Lake, Lakeview, North Chicago, Rogers Park, West Chicago, and South Chicago all fall into the City of Chicago grouping.
These townships were reassessed in 2015 and 2018. They will be reassessed again in 2021.
West Chicago Township
This township is made up of many different neighborhoods. West Chicago Township includes
- West Loop
- West Town
- Pilsen
- East Garfield Park
- West Garfield Park
- Little Italy
- Heart of Chicago
- Lawndale
- Greektown
Two of the foremost characteristics of West Chicago Township are its authentic cultural restaurants and neighborhoods with pride in their cultural roots. In West Town, the historic Ukrainian Village is home to the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art and the Ukrainian National Museum. Chicago Avenue is a little bundle of quirky breweries and restaurants located near resale shops with curated antiques.
West Town is also eclectic. It is home to Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, along with a center that preserves the ancient art of bath rituals for visitors to experience.
West Chicago Township also boasts classic urban beauty in the form of Garfield Park and its historic Conservatory. Park patrons can stroll through the formal gardens and enjoy the sculptures hidden among the flowers. Garfield Park has a basketball court, ice skating rink, playground, and soccer fields for recreation at all ages throughout all seasons.
